Even in his time, Rodin's place in the world's art history was secure, on a level with his heroes Phidias and Michelangelo. His importance was recognized by his students, rivals and even teachers, such as Carrier-Belleuse, Carpeaux, Dalou, Bourdelle, and Claudel. Nowhere was closer to the core of creativity than the network of their studios in Paris, which became the magnet for artists and connoisseurs from around the globe. For Rodin and his peers, the studio was a hive of various activities, where the collaborative labor on large commissions carried on side-by-side with the making of small “multiples” and the essential daily discipline of drawing or shaping clay figures based on the poses of models.
