A PEEK INTO THE CHIMEI COLLECTION: EXPLORING THE MYSTERIES OF COLOR FROM PAINTINGS
ATYPICAL AESTHETICS CLASS
HEALING WITH ART CONSERVATION
CHIMEI MUSEUM HAS ALWAYS BEEN A MAGICAL HEALING PLACE FOR MANY. STANDING IN FRONT OF A BEAUTIFUL PAINTING PROVIDES VISITORS A PEACE OF MIND, AS IF THE WORLD HAS CEASED FOR A TRANQUIL MOMENT. WHILE APPRECIATING THE PAINTING, WHAT IS TO BE RECOGNIZED IS NOT ONLY THE ARTIST'S CREATIVE INGENUITY AND YEARS OF HISTORY BEHIND THE PAINTING, BUT ALSO THE WARM CARING OF IT BY THE HANDS OF CONSERVATORS UPON ARRIVING TO THE MUSEUM.
One-of-a-kind painting restoration experiment class in Taiwan
CHIMEI Museum’s educator collaborated with its conservation team to design this one-of-a-kind aesthetic course. With this hands-on practice of art restoration project, you will be allured into the world of conservation. When you visit the museum after this class, you will be able to appreciate paintings from a different perspective.
Take a peek at an interesting Conservation Case at CHIMEI Museum
Hidden secrets are unveiled when the conservators and researchers at CHIMEI Museum explore the past history of the paintings, understand the current physical state of them through scientific examination, and further tailor a restoration plan. Let’s share some of the secrets we discovered while examining these paintings.
Coloring experience can also be utilized in daily life
The observation skills and coloring technique developed in the course can also be used in our daily life or home repairs, such as make-up, wall painting, paint peeling, furniture fading, etc., subverting your imagination with restorations that can be applied into our daily life!
Sense of Healing & Achievement
There are many ways of healing, one of which is through hands-on practice and self-talk. The process of focusing on the practice itself is extremely stress-relieving. After repairing the defective painting, you will not only get a sense of accomplishment, but also be able to bring home a unique decorative frame that is uniquely yours.

Why are some parts of the image blurry?
Some parts of the collection in the museum are still within the copyright protection period, hence the images are not able to publicize on the internet.
Publicized Google Street View does not mean the museum is opened for photography in the permanent exhibition galleries.
The reason for CHIMEI Museum to restrain people from taking photographs inside the permanent exhibition gallery is to maintain quality touring experiences and safety to all visitors. Many items on display are not covered with protective glasses in order to bring closeness to the public. It is the management team’s responsibility to prevent injuries of the visitors and damages to the collections. The Google Street View Service allows visitors to enjoy free visual tours of the CHIMEI Museum any time of the day at your convenience and in efforts to fulfill those who wish to take photographs inside the museum.

Fax:06-266-0848 About CHIMEI Arts Award
The Angel of Glory is an imitating work of French sculptor Louis Ernest BARRIAS (1841-1905),
An Allegory of Fame, by Founder Wen-Long Shi.
The founder of this award, Chairman Wen-Long Shi, hopes the event will continue passing the torch to the next generations, allowing CHIMEI to be the driving force in the promotion of art in Taiwan. With the help of the CHIMEI Arts Award, these Taiwanese young artists can reduce the pressure of economic burden and devote their time and efforts into creation, and be the spreading seeds that bring art into people's lives.
Each year, the event invites experts from the academic fields, senior artists and musicians from the industries, to jointly select the ones that are the promising future stars.
Past winners often express their gratitude to the CHIMEI Culture Foundation for the prize that had greatly helped and encouraged their creative careers. Each art prize winner will have a piece of their entry artwork chosen by CHIMEI Museum as its permanent collection; and the winners of the music prize will have the opportunity to perform at the CHIMEI Hall.
CHIMEI Arts Award Trophy – The Angel of Glory
Artist / Wen-Long Shi
Concept of the Trophy :

“My museum serves only one purpose : to exist for the public.”
─ CHIMEI Group Founder Wen-Long Shi
Founder of the CHIMEI Group, Mr. Wen-Long Shi, was very fond of his childhood visits to a local museum that he was inspired to build a museum for everyone to enjoy. The museum was first established and housed in the administration building of the CHIMEI Corporation in 1992, relocated to the Tainan Metropolitan Park in 2014, and reopened in 2015. The museum is here so that people of all ages and social backgrounds can have easy access to Western culture and arts without having to travel abroad.
The collection at CHIMEI Museum consists mainly of Western art, musical instruments, arms and armour, animal taxidermy and fossils, exhibiting approximately 4000 items, which is about one-third of the complete CHIMEI collection. Founder Shi expressed that, “Good works of art are not to be kept just for oneself to enjoy, but to be shared with the public; and a good collection should not reflect just the collector’s personal tastes, but to tailor to common tastes and have enough varieties for everyone to find something to enjoy and appreciate.”

The classic Christmas market not only fulfills everyone’s appetite, but also creates a cozy holiday atmosphere. Besides, we will be presenting outdoor Christmas movies for the first time, allowing every attendant to relax and enjoy classic festive movies on the vast lawn.
As for indoor exhibition, we choose “hope” as the main theme, and specially select precious collections around the world that represent hope. Each of them bears touching stories and the spirit of persistence, including three “violins of hope” that supported their owners through the hardest time of their lives. Chi Mei Medical Center x CHIMEI Museum
Introducing “Art Therapy” and benefiting society through collaboration of Chi Mei Medical Center and CHIMEI Museum.
Combining resources to help schizophrenia patients find serenity and self-awareness.
Shi Wen-Long, founder of CHIMEI group, once said that Chi Mei Medical Center and CHIMEI Museum are long-lasting gifts from CHIMEI to the Taiwanese society, for only a life with good physical and mental health can be called a happy life. This year, in the hopes of fulfilling founder Shi’s goal of pursuing mental and physical health, these two institutions collaborate for the first time and introduce an art therapy program by integrating their professional resources. They provide a series of art classes to schizophrenia patients, help them practice expressing their emotions, activate their memories, and improve their self-awareness. Many patients become happier after taking the classes, not only they have realized their potential to create art, but also expressed that the therapy helped them feel better.
The uniqueness of art paved the way for the emergence of art therapy. When created and shared, art not only conveys aesthetics, but also allows one to tranquilize their thoughts and emotions. Art therapy helps patients express themselves, communicate with inner self, and achieve self-development by providing non-verbal communication methods and a safe space for expression, making it one of the best catalysts to integrate soul, mind, and body, and ultimately accomplishing holistic medicine. Art therapy is frequently used for the treatment of various diseases in recent years, especially mental illnesses. The aforementioned collaborating program targets patients with schizophrenia, a mental disorder under much public attention.

The collaborating program originated from a proposal from Chi Mei Medical Center Psychiatry Department. Upon seeing the art restoring classes provided by CHIMEI Museum in an elementary school, the Attending Physician of the Psychiatry Department, Chang Chih-Cheng, contacted the Museum and proposed the idea of collaborative art therapy classes for schizophrenia patients, which was immediately accepted. With the support of Holistic Healthcare Program of Chi Mei Medical Center, they began planning and discussing since September of last year, but due to the pandemic, the course finally came into place this July. It is composed of three main themes: art restoring, paper folding, and drawing, and spans half a year from July to December, with a total of seventeen sessions. According to Lin Ya-Chi, CHIMEI Museum Exhibition & Education Dept. Planning Assistant Manager and the course arranger, in order to enhance patients’ confidence and reduce their frustrations, special alterations were made, such as simplifying the creating process and lengthening the practice time, to heal patients in the process of creating art. At the same time, clinical psychologists from Chi Mei Medical Center also helped them express their emotions, activate their memories, and find their inner selves.
Chang said that recent news reports about major crimes in the society often stigmatize schizophrenia patients and their family, and many people even hold great prejudice towards the illness. In fact, schizophrenia is a treatable cerebral disease that bears mental symptoms, such as hallucination and delusion, and more profoundly, other cognitive function defects. Negative symptoms such as motivational deficits, apathy, asociality, and avolition are also the main obstacles that hinder them from returning to work and school. Art therapy is a suitable way to restore their self-esteem and help them regain the confidence to return to the society through non-verbal interactions, self-exploration, and expression enhancement.
The art therapy course has already received numerous feedback from patients. According to Lin, in the beginning, patients seemed unemotional, but after a few classes, they started to laugh wholeheartedly, and even looked forward to the following classes. Patients that performed well even guided others and interacted more with each other. Furthermore, some patients were delighted to find out that they were actually capable of creating art. Today, Chi Mei Medical Center and CHIMEI Museum specially conducted a presentation, exhibiting the patients’ earnest and exquisite artworks. At the same time, a drawing class was also held, and every student created their work diligently.
Art Therapy Course – Patients’ Artwork Presentation
“I hope that Chi Mei Medical Center and CHIMEI Museum will stand in Taiwan for more than a hundred years. After all, healthy mental state and body are the roots of a happy life. I would say that this is my vocation of life.” said Shi Wen-Long, founder of CHIMEI group. The collaboration of Chi Mei Medical Center and CHIMEI Museum is a perfect manifestation of his spirit. Chang emphasized that this project is just a beginning, the team will continue to integrate resources to provide more services to the public.

Kuo Ling-Ling, Director of CHIMEI Museum, stated that she was grateful for Chi Mei Medical Center for providing the museum with the opportunity to serve patients. Art is an excellent treatment for the society. The museum not only provides art education resources, but also endeavors to integrate art into people’s life. Art companions are provided in the hopes of healing the public’s minds, tranquilizing their moods, and bringing emotional strength to families and individuals alike.
