Outside the Box! When Machine Meets Art

“If one’s life is confined within a box, then one can only live in his secluded world.” Outside the Box! When Machine Meets Art is an artistic journey that begins with this motto of Wen-Long Shi, the founder of CHIMEI Group. The exhibition imparts new stories from old machines, showcased by eight artists from six countries who draw inspirations from machines and industrial materials, and exemplified their artistic creations outside the box with the spirit of continuous innovation.

“If one’s life is confined within a box, then one can only live in his secluded world.”
This is a motto that CHIMEI Museum and Group Founder Mr. Wen Long Shi lives by.
Overcoming poverty and illness in his early years, his innovative approach to business and manufacturing of acrylics earned him the title, “Father of Acrylics” in Taiwan. An avid art collector, music lover, and accomplished amateur painter, his success in business also allowed him to realize his childhood dream of building a museum. Mr. Shi’s life story exemplifies overcoming adversity to re-define one’s life by thinking “Outside the Box.”

Introduction to the Exhibition

“If one’s life is confined within a box, then one can only live in his secluded world.” This is a motto that CHIMEI Museum and Group Founder Mr.

This exhibition explores the connections between industrial innovation, social changes, and artistic creativity. Many of the Museum’s rare collection of industrial machinery and tools dating from the turn of the 20th century are showcased for the first time to the public. Outside the Box! also features works by eight contemporary artists from six different countries whose artistic creations are inspired by machine tools and industrial materials.

This exhibition aspires to challenge the viewers to think outside the “Box” of conventional artistic expression, but also tell stories of innovation and artistic creativity. There are four themes in this exhibition— “Unstrained with Infinite Possibilities,” which introduces early machines from a new perspective and also tells the life story of Shi’s thinking outside the box; “Machines Unraveled,” which shows how the use of machines can be taken to a different level. “Materials Unraveled,” which demonstrates the diverse changes of industrial materials; and “Infinity Workshop,” which offers a glimpse into the artist’s unconventional way of looking at ordinary objects.
