PAST EXHIBITION

Session I
Tales of Everyday Life

“Beauty” starts with the feeling of being moved, “technique” begins with observations, and “art” comes from inspiration of daily life. Through his subtle and focused observation of life, Henk Helmantel is capable of turning “the ordinary” in everyday life into “the extraordinary”.
This section tells eight stories about different segments of Helmantel’s everyday life. They are “Mouse”, “The Hedgehog”, “Still Life with Shells”, “Small Box from Taiwan”, “Small Bag with Dried Fruits and Hazelnuts”, “The Former Rectory of the Church of Westeremden”, “A View of Huizinge, Groningen” and “The St. Andrew’s Church in Westeremden”. Through these stories, we will have a closer understanding of Helmantel’s life and appreciate his daily-life experiences.

Session II
Objects as Inspiration

I see object as a sign of the great wonder of God’s creation.
He has made it so wonderful that it fills our lives, and even more than that.
                                                                          - Henk Helmantel

Though things in the world are different in their characteristics and appearances, Helmantel can always observe and appreciate them with a calm and grateful heart. He believes that everything in the world cannot exist independently without others. Everything, natural or man-made, has its purpose and a place to belong to. All the things are connected. They enrich people’s life and manifest the greatness of the Creator. Helmantel said, “If you put an apple or a pear down somewhere, you can see how the light falls on it and brings out its true beauty; such an object is just as lovely on a small scale as a mountain landscape.” For Helmantel, everything can become a painting.

Session III
Henk Helmantel

Henk Helmantel, a contemporary artist of realism from Holland, has spent his life gazing at this world with ardent admiration.
Henk Helmantel was born in 1945  in Westeremden, a small town in Northern Holland. His parents were farmers and pious Christians. In 1961, he was admitted to Minerva Art Academy and started to study art, indulging himself in the learning of classical painting techniques and modern art concepts. Now, Henk Helmantel is reputed as an iconic contemporary realist painter in Europe, known for his outstanding command of painting techniques to represent the textual and spiritual essence of objects.

Session IV
Church and Faith

Faith is part of Helmantel’s everyday life. He believes that the talent of artistic creation is a gift from God, therefore, he has to work hard to fully exert this talent. He paints diligently in his studio from morning till night. He also prays every day and always goes to church on Sunday like clockwork. He particularly likes the space and ambience inside a church, especially those quiet corners in an old medieval church. In such rarely visited and barely decorated spaces, there are only mottled traces of history with light coming inside through the window, adding a sprawling sense of tranquility to the spaces. So sacred, quiet and full of divine light, these corners are restful oases for the heart and soul.
