About the Lecturer
Paper Artist Hsin-Fu Hung
With a knife, one can create life; with a piece of paper, one can build a world.
Nearly forty years have swiftly passed since my first encounter with paper. Initially, I never thought about how paper art could change my life.
The deeper the devotion one has, the further the ripple effect it creates. Paper art is not only my personal interest but also a medium to make friends. Strangers, while staring at each other, might find it awkward to express their friendliness. But when one takes out a small piece of paper from the pocket, and does some simple folding or cutting, one can easily initiate the conversation. Paper art can help build new friendship, and thus gradually form an ideal Utopia.

The first time I went abroad was in September 1992. I was invited by the Leuven Paper Museum in Belguim for a solo exhibition. Although Belgium does not have diplomatic relations with Taiwan, on the day of the opening, I saw our blue, white, and red national flag splendidly hanging high in the center of the gallery. That gave me a shiver. I suddenly felt that paper art was no longer just my personal hobby, but also a way for me to help “Taiwan” gain global recognition. Since then, I’ve been more actively engaged in international exhibitions and teaching. I’ve also introduced many fellow artists and Taiwanese artists to international exhibitions under permitted circumstances.
In the past twenty years, I’ve held solo exhibitions and planned teaching tours around the world, including Belgium, Hong Kong, Japan, Germany, the United States, China, France, Guatemala, Honduras, Russia, and Canada. My works also have been showcased in countries where I have personally never been to. Such international recognition is not only because of my personal paper art creation, but also is about recognizing “Taiwan.”
Art itself has no borders. That is why my paper art from “Taiwan” can be exhibited in so many countries, even in places that had poor relations with Taiwan in the early years. I have been able to introduce paper art culture developed in Taiwan to countries around the world by breaking through diplomatic constraints. This is not only my honor as an individual, but also my mission as a Taiwanese artist.
