Beyond the Shadows
Curatorial Concept
Have you ever noticed the existence of shadows around you?
In the environment, as long as there is a trace of light, it can reflect the things around us. Light travels in straight lines, when it is blocked by an opaque object, "shadows" will be generated. In real life, we are bound to perceive the existence and changes of "light," but rarely do we pay attention to the "shadow" behind the light.
In the changing of light and shadow, light has always been the protagonist, attracting everyone's attention and bringing colors to the world. In contrast, "shadow" is the place where light is being blocked. It is the condition after the encounter of "light" and "shape." The shape is the body of the shadow and the shadow is the imprint of the shape. Shadows and shapes have obvious differences but with close linkages; however, the shadow is virtuality whereas the shape is solidity. The magic behind the lively shadows lies in the key on how solidity is expressed through virtuality, and how the shapes are revealed through the shadows.
Beyond the Shadows is a collection of fifteen artists from Taiwan and abroad. It contains a series of six questions about "shadows" to stimulate the audience's perception and imagination of shadows, and successfully opened up a new world of shadows beyond imagination. These artworks have subverted people's perceptions of the boundaries between virtuality and reality, authenticity and phony, visibility and invisibility, presence and eternity. They have led us to look at ordinary things in life with a brand new perspective. It is hoped that this exhibition will become the most astonishing viewing experience of “shadows” in life.
